American War

George Henry Turner, 1st Ohio Volunteer Artillery  George Henry Turner and comrades, 1st Ohio Volunteer Artillery, Spanish American War
Two photos of George Henry Turner, Battery C, 1st Ohio Volunteer Light Artillery Spanish American War. In the photo at left, he is shown in camp, carrying a rifles and equipped with a Mills belt and bayonet. The light artillery was usually only given rifles when on guard duty...or as props for photos. The photo at right appears to be a pre-war photo taken in a studio. The headgear was dropped for the hat shown in the left photo during the war. Turner also looks younger and much more slight in build. The hats in the right photo do indicate that the men are in Battery C. Turner was born in Belmont County, Ohio. After the war, he lived mostly in and near the small village of Athalia, Lawrence County, Ohio.
