These recommendations are listed below. Cohen, Stan. Images of Spanish American War, April-August,1998.  (Missoula:Pictorial Histories Publishing Co., Inc., 1997).
[This book has many great illustrations, photos, and tidbits on the war. Great book for just picking up and reading a bit here and there. Its text is not a comprehensive history of the war, however]
Blow, Michael, A Ship to Remember. (New York: William Morrow and Company, Inc., 1992).

[A good book on the sinking of the battleship MAINE, and is suportive of the coal bunker fire theory. Well written. It also provides a good account of the war itself]

Edwards, John, Crucible of Empire (1stBooks.com)

Field, Ron, Spanish-American War 1898. (Washington: Brasseys Inc., 1998).

[A good source for information on uniforms of the Spanish American War era ]

Jeffers, H. Paul, Colonel Roosevelt: Theodore Roosevelt Goes to War, 1897-1898. (New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1996).

[A good readable book on Roosevelt in the war]

McCullough, David, Mornings on Horseback. (New York: Simon and Schuster, Inc., 1981).

[This excellently written work is a great book to read before or after Roosevelt's The Rough Riders. The book helps readers understand the man, and what made him into what he was].

Nofi, Albert A., The Spanish-American War, 1898. (Conshohocken, PA: Combined Books, 1996).

[This is a very good, readable basic history of the war]

Roosevelt, Theodore, The Rough Riders. (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1920)(the link is for a modern paperback reprint).
[This book is a must for anyone on the war. Not only does the reader get a very readable first-hand account, they get insight into the mind of a man who became one of the heroes of the war and a leader of the nation]
Samuels, Peggy and Harold, Remembering the Maine. (Washington: The Smithsonian Institution Press, 1995).

[Another good book on the sinking of the battleship MAINE, and is suportive of the mine theory ]
